Skeletal System

The Skeletal System is a key system to the human body.  It has several functions which include:
  • Support
  • Protection
  • Leverage for Movement
  • Storage of Minerals
  • Blood Cell Production
The Skeletal System has 206 bones and can be grouped into the Axial and Appendicular divisions.




The bones have 5 important tissues or layers to them.  Working from outside to in, they are:
  • Periosteum
  • Compact Bone
  • Spongy (Trabecular) Bone
  • Endosteum
  • Medullary Cavity

There are 3 regions to the bone:
  • Epiphysis
  • Metaphysis
  • Diaphysis
